"Midirected Zeal

In a tremendous hour of light and power on the Damascus Road, a voice which Saul of Tarsus recognized as that of the living Lord spoke to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?"

Whenever Jesus confronted Saul he did not intend to take anything away from him, but to re-direct his zeal into more constructive channels.  That is the way Christ works with us when we surrender to him.  Many gifted and talented people need to have their energies redirected to the glory of God.

Acts 9:1-9, NKJV

Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”
And he said, “Who are You, Lord?”
Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.”
So he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do You want me to do?”
Then the Lord said to him, “Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”

And the men who journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice but seeing no one. Then Saul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened he saw no one. But they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank.

                               "Misplaced Confidence

Peter was a proud specimen of a man.  He stands tall and straight, head and shoulders above the crowd.  He also has a high estimate of himself.  Jesus knows Peter has a tragic flaw.  With much concern he says to him, "Simon, Simon, Satan has desired to have you that he might sift you like wheat." Jesus knew that Peter was inclined to be overconfident of himself.

Quite often Christians become overconfident in their own abilities to follow Christ and begin to neglect the means of grace God has provided.  In such a state they are vulnerable to the merciless sifting of Satan.  Christ is concerned about those who shift their confidence from him to themselves.

 Luke 22:24-34, NKJV

"Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest.   And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’ But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves.   For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves.

“But you are those who have continued with Me in My trials. And I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me, that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”

"And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”

"But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.”

"Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.
