Something To Consider:

"We know God easily if we do not constrain ourselves to define Him."        - Joseph Joubert

                                    Angels In Overalls

It has been a long time since I wore a pair of overalls. I hardly ever see anyone wearing them these days except to make a style statement. Made of sturdy material and with many pockets and loops for the tools needed, they were the dress of choice for those who worked with their hands. My grandfather, “Big Boy” Collins, wore them for work because they were functional and for everyday dress because they were comfortable for a man his size. All of my memories of him have him in a pair of overalls.

In the aftermath of the devastation Hurricane Ike visited upon our region it has been refreshing to witness the ready response of those who are rolling up their sleeves and going into the ruin to work for redemption. These are truly “Angels in Overalls.” Their acts of compassion have been met with tears of joy by those who have been hard hit by hard times; sweat equity has become the currency of heaven.

I have been particularly proud of those who call LCUMC their church home. The character of a church becomes evident in times like these. Those who responded to the need to get our buildings and grounds cleaned up, those who showed up at a friend’s door, those who have opened their home to others, those who have volunteered to assist with repairs and clean up, those who have participated in organizing and implementing the distribution of UMCOR resources, those who have provided time, materials, and money…all of these are “Angels in Overalls.” May their tribe increase as the recovery stretches into the month ahead.
